LA July down 1.61pc to 687,891 TEU - LB off 7.7pc to 637,091 TEU

THE Port of Los Angeles posted a 1.61 per cent year-on-year decline in July container volume to 687,891 TEU. 

At the adjacent San Pedro Bay port of Long Beach July container volume fell 7.7 per cent, with exports slipping 0.7 per cent and empties plunging 15.9 per cent year on year. 

July box volume in LA was ahead of June`s 676,006 TEU, but below May`s 770,409 TEU, which was the busiest May in the port`s history. 

Laden July import boxes were up five per cent year on year Los Angeles to 368,696 TEU, with laden exports down 2.87 per cent to 132,490 TEU. Empties were down 11.9 per cent to 186,704 TEU. 

LA port executive director Gene Seroka said that as retailers prepare for consumer needs during the holiday season, the port was encouraged to see import volumes increase.

"We are prepared along with our supply chain stakeholders to handle cargo with speed, efficiency and first-class service as we kick off our traditional busy season," he said.

Long Beach was down 7.7 per cent to 637,091 TEU in July compared to the same month in 2015, when harbour handled a record amount of cargo, said the port authority. 

July imports fell 5.9 per cent to 325,608 TEU while exports slipped 0.7 per cent to 142,812 TEU. Empties came in a 168,671 TEU, a 15.9 per cent year on year drop.
