RECOVERING trade bolstered China`s 10 largest container ports` volume increased 26.2 per cent year on year to 26.02 million TEU following 2009`s year-on-year drop of five per cent.
Ports on the Bohai Rim showed the strongest gains with Lianyungang up 60.8 per cent while Yingkou posted a 61.1 per cent gain. Bucking the global downturn trend was the result of robust intra-Asian market trade growth, said London`s Containerisation International.
Lianyungang`s 910,880 TEU in first quarter and Yingkou`s 820,540 TEU were also attributed to fresh investment in Cosco Pacific terminals, and trade generated by China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) as well as further development of the "New Silk Road" rail land bridge.
Dalian, Tianjin and Qingdao, also on in the Bohai Rim area, reported growth, benefiting from the hinterland`s industrialisation drive.
Shenzhen, Ningbo and Guangzhou were not far behind with Shenzhen leading south China ports with 27 per cent growth to 4.9 million TEU. Ningbo was up 22 per cent to 2.76 million TEU.
Shanghai first quarter volumes were strong at 6.43 million-TEU, a spike of 14.6 per cent, which according to Yangtze River Administration grew 36.7 per cent between January and April to 2.52 million TEU.
