THE Port of Antwerp posted a 5.5 per cent year-on-year increase in cargo in the first nine months of the year to 7.2 million TEU, the port authority revealed.

With eight per cent more box volume (up 5.4 per cent by weight) means that the port is likely to end the year crossing the 200 million tonne mark.

The Port of Antwerp is currently the third busiest port in Europe.

Antwerp claims to be winning market share on all trading routes. Even in the Asian trade the port managed to close the first nine months of 2015 with growth of 6.2 per cent.

Ro-ro volumes were also up by 2.5 per cent to more than 3.4 million tonnes, although the number of cars handled was down by 9.7 per cent to more than 825,000 vehicles.

A total of 10,786 seagoing ships called at the Port of Antwerp during the past nine months, 2.5 per cent more than in the same period in 2014.
