A-E off 10pc to US$233/TEU, but up 15pc to USWC and 9pc to USEC

SPOT rates for shipping containers from Asia to northern Europe fell 10 per cent to US$233 per TEU last Friday, according to Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) data, Reuters reports. 

On the Asia-Med run, rates dropped 20 per cent in the week till Friday, but rising 15 per cent to $1,377 per FEU to ports on the US west coast and down nine per cent to $2,397 per FEU to US east and Gulf coast ports.

The Shanghai spot freight rates have so far increased in eight weeks this year but fallen in 31 weeks.

This is the fifth consecutive week of falling rates on the world`s busiest route. Rates are at their lowest since June 19, and widely seen as at loss-making levels.
