GENEVA`s Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has announced plans to implement a general rate increase (GRI) on all sea freight transported from Asia to Canada, effective September 15.

The rate hikes are US$520 per TEU, $650 per FEU, and $731 per 40-foot high-cube.

In a separate development, MSC said it has suspended the application of a strike surcharge (SRK) on export cargo transported from the United States to New Zealand, following further review of labour conditions in New Zealand. The suspension of the fee will last until September 30, until further notice.

"In the event of further labour actions, the New Zealand Strike Surcharge will be implemented under the same terms and conditions effective October 1.

The SRI first introduced on all export cargo on August 15 was $110 per TEU and $220 per FEU. The extra fee was levied "due to the effects of the on-going labour dispute between the Maritime Union of New Zealand and the Port of Auckland," it said.
