CALIFORNIA`s Port of Long Beach, the second busiest container port in the US, recently posted a 3.5 per cent increase in its containerised imports in June, falling 1.5 per cent from May and experiencing the slowest growth since March, according to port figures.

June import growth also lagged behind the nine per cent export increase. But June`s exports increase still fell 3.5 per cent compared to May`s result.

The port handled 271,113 loaded import TEU in June, second only to the 275,100 TEU handled in May.

Global Port Tracker forecasts US container imports would be flat each month this summer compared to 2010, but would see double-digit growth in imports in autumn from Asia.

From January to June, Long Beach containerised imports increased six per cent year on year, while exports were up four per cent, and total cargo volume including imports, exports and empty containers was up 6.2 per cent.
