GLOBAL marine terminal operator DP World has opened an inland container terminal in Lahore, linked by 1,000 kilometre railway to the company`s Karachi Qasim box port.

DP World Lahore, also known as the Prem Nagar Dry Port, was inaugurated by Pakistani railway ministry chairman Shahid Hussain Raza, who explained how it was his department`s first public private partnership.

Positioned to serve Pakistan`s largest hinterland Lahore-Sahiwal market, the inauguration of the inland facility follows the January 12 opening of Terminal 2 in Port Qasim, which expanded its capacity 33 per cent from 900,000 TEU to 1.2 million TEU.

The ICT facility is built on 40 hectares and connected by rail and roads to some of the country`s most populous areas. The terminal will be managed and operated by DP World in a joint venture with Premier Mercantile Services (PMS), a Pakistani maritime terminal operator.

Designed and developed to international standards, DP World Lahore offers the local trading community a 25,000-square foot fully-equipped container freight station (CFS) and will also provide local haulage the customer`s door.
