THE Port Metro Vancouver container volume increased 41.4 per cent year on year in May, rising to a 20-month high, according to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

Imports increased 9.3 per cent above April levels to 108,666 laden TEU, the highest volume since September 2008. Exports trade also reached its highest level in a year even though container exports fell 4.4 per cent, the fifth straight monthly decline.

The May expansion came amid a broader improvement in shipping demand that helped Vancouver to its busiest month for container trade since the economic downturn, reported Newark`s Journal of Commerce. But the exports grew on a sequential basis 10.3 per cent and the 85,548 TEU marked the highest number Vancouver has seen since May 2009.
