SRI LANKA`s main Port of Colombo this year logged its highest throughput of all time for March, recording a total 360,801 TEU in volume, up 21 per cent from March, 2009.
First quarter volume meanwhile was up 27.4 per cent year-on-year at 993,166 TEUs, the Colombo Daily News reported.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) attributed the figures to quality of service, as well as its on-going efforts to attract international container lines to its harbours.
Chief among the SLPA`s business development initiatives are the numerous mega technological development projects currently underway to bring the country`s ports in line with those of its neighbours. The sustained effort has already resulted in a 15.7 per cent increase in March volume for the Authority`s harbours nationwide.
