A KAZAKH DETA Air Cargo McDonnell Douglas DC-10-40, freight flight 9D-515 from Almaty, Kazakhstan, stopping at Tbilisi, Georgia, on its way to Hong Kong with three crew and 55 tons of cargo, went off the runway without injury or damage in Tbilisi while landing in heavy snow before dawn.
The airport was closed until noon to unload the airplane and move it to the apron, reported the Aviation Herald of Salzburg, Austria. The flight then proceeded to Hong Kong after a three-day delay.
Commenting on the Aviation Herald website, "kazakhstani pilot" said: "From personal knowledge, DETA is not just going to ignore the significance of the incident and press on flying. They are doing the right thing by sending staff to TBS [Tbilisi] to conduct inspections that are required by DC-10 AMM 05-51-03. Only after those inspections are completed with satisfactory results will they depart. DETA may be small, but they take their staff [and] take their roles quite seriously."
This was in response to "Anonymous" who said: "Bad weather, poor visibility, and heavy snow is a recipe for disaster; it`s a risk and a serious safety issue; and incidents like this will continue to happen, until someone smells the roses. All in the name of MAKING REVENUE. Here I must commend Stelios and EasyJet: When the weather is very poor, he is not shy to ground his planes. Lucky escape to the crew here this time around."
