SHANGHAI`s Pudong Airport recorded a year-on-year increase of 19.3 per cent in its cargo volume to 254,500 tonnes in November, Logistics Week reported.
Led by the sudden increase of cargo, the freight rate doubled 2007`s historical high at the highest. Pudong Airport`s Frankfurt cargo service was offering CNY21 (US$3.08) per kilogram in March at the lowest. The price shot up to CNY40 per kilogram in December.
Passenger volume of the airport grew 33.5 per cent to 3.1 million.
The other airport in the city, Hongqiao Airport, recorded 27.1 per cent increase in cargo volume to 42,000 tonnes. Its passenger volume was up 6.5 per cent to 2.1 million.
An unidentified person from Air China Cargo Shanghai Office said cargo capacity shortage became serious in September. Statistics of the earlier months in 2009 showed that cargo volume had been falling but recovered in August. The growth sped up in September and later caused capacity shortage in November. A large quantity of cargo was stranded in the airport.
