Chinese ports see container volume grow 4.2pc in November

CONTAINER throughput of major ports in China increased 4.2 per cent year on year in November, slightly up over October and only a small decrease compared to peak season months of August and September, Logistics Week reported.
The report said there were signs of recovery in Shanghai and Shenzhen with container throughput decreases shrinking. Throughput of foreign trade cargo grew 29.3 per cent in November over the same month in 2008. The cumulative volume in the period from January to November rose 7.9 per cent year on year.
In the first 11 months, Chinese ports handled 6.6 billion tonnes, up eight per cent year on year. The cumulative volume of container throughput fell 6.2 per cent year on year, but the decrease has been narrowing.
During the same period, seaport throughput increased 7.7 per cent while river port throughput rose 8.8 per cent
