SHORE-to-ship electric power, or cold-ironing, will commence on five APL containerships in Port of Oakland as part of a US$11 million project to be operational in December of next year.
In a process used by the US Navy for the last decade cold ironing will reduce an annual emissions of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter by 1,500 pounds with a time-line for a federal mandate by 2014, said the company.
Bay Area Air Quality Management District is to fund two grants to the carrier of which includes a grant of $2.8 million from the goods movement bond programme to electrify berths at APL`s Global Gateway Central and $2 million from the Carl Moyer programme to equip the first three vessels for cold ironing.
APL Americas region president John Bowe said its job was to move the world`s trade and to do so in way that`s sensitive to our neighbours` air quality.
