DANISH carrier Maersk Line announced that it is raising rates from northern European and western Mediterranean ports to West African destinations, commencing October 1.
Rates from northern Europe and West Mediterranean to West Africa will increase EUR150 (US$217) per TEU and EUR270 euros (US$391) per FEU both dry or reefer.
From the United Kingdom to West Africa, rates will rise EUR130 (US$214) per TEU and EUR240 (US$396) per FEU both dry and reefer.
"Trading conditions for the carriers operating in these markets are still subject to unacceptable rate levels and the situation is unsustainable in the longer term," a Maersk spokesman said.
