November New York/NJ volume up 5.5pc to record 527,974 TEU

THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey handled a record 527,974 TEU in November, representing a 5.5 per cent year on year increase with loaded import containers up 9.1 per cent to 271,755 TEU, yet loaded export containers dropped by 1.8 per cent to 114,884 TEU. 

Empty import containers rose 46.7 per cent to 2,333 TEU, while empty export containers rose 4.6 per cent to 139,002 TEU.

For the first 11 months of the year, the port`s volumes dropped by 2.5 per cent year on year to 5.73 million TEU, reported India`s Transport Weekly.

Intermodal rail terminals handled 43,556 containers in November, and in the first 11 months, volumes reached 498,021 containers, year-on-year growth of 5.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively.

The port authority`s the North American container market share, on the other hand, fell 14.8 per cent from January to November, down from a 15.8 per cent share a year earlier. 

In the northeast, the port held a leading 50.4 per cent market share, down marginally from 51.9 per cent, according to data from the American Association of Port Authorities.
