THE Panama Canal has welcomed its 500th ship since the expanded waterway opened its new locks to shipping traffic on June 26. The 500th transit was made by the Yan Ming containership, the 8,500 TEU YM Unity.

The Panama Canal Authority said in a statement that the new neopanamax locks are already exceeding expectations, reported gCaptain.

"We are very optimistic, because our customers continue to rely on our route, what drives us every day to provide quality service," said Canal Administrator Jorge Luis Quijano.

The YM Unity began its transit of the canal on the Pacific side after sailing from China, headed for the US east coast and Singapore.
