GLOBAL port operator DP World CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem has opened talks with Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode on developing Nigeria`s logistics network, reports IHS Media.

"In countries such as Nigeria and others across the continent, senior officials have expressed a determination to overcome obstacles to economic development," he said.

"We expressed our readiness to support the efforts being made to develop ports and logistics centres," said Mr Bin Sulayem.

DP World had just been awarded a major concession to develop and manage a port at Berbera in Somaliland. The company has existing operations in Algeria, Dijibouti, Egypt, Mozambique and Senegal.

Earlier this year, DP World won a 25-year concession to develop and operate a new logistics centre in Kigali, Rwanda.

The new US$442 million 30-year Berbera concession with its 10-year automatic extension, involves expanding infrastructure based on cargo volume growth.

DP World owns 65 per cent of the joint venture with the government of Somaliland managing the port.

A report commissioned last year by DP World on the continent`s infrastructure gap found port vessel turnaround times in Africa lag behind other world markets and that other modes of transport, such as rail, are also in need of development.

The report said a range of policies, from regional free trade agreements to improved public-private partnership frameworks, are gaining momentum across a large number of countries, which suggests that a more accommodating environment for infrastructure development is taking hold.
