AT LEAST 20 were killed and 60 injured when soon to be scrapped tanker 88,122-gross ton Federal 1 (aka Aces) exploded on November 1 at the Gadani shipbreaking beach 25 kilometres north of Karachi.

The blast is thought to have been caused by gas cylinder explosions aboard the floating storage offshore (FSO) vessel, beached at Gadani, with "many more trapped inside the burning vessel", reported London`s Tanker Operator.

Fire at an oil tanker in the Gadani Ship-breaking yard was put out on the fourth day.

The Kenyan flagged ship had reached Gadani carrying 19 Indian crewmembers on October 22. The same day the crew left the ship, sources said.

The ship was bought by owner of Ghafoor and Company Abdul Ghafoor, who has been missing since the incident. Police has arrested the contractor who was dealing with the workers.

A case on behalf of the government has been filed at the Gadani police station. According to police four suspects have been named in the case.

More than 60 workers are reported injured. It is feared that the death toll will increase as many workers are in a critical state suffering from severe burns.
