THE port of Virginia handled a record 219,857 TEU in September, representing a year-on-year increase of two per cent. Last month marked the port`s eighth consecutive month of throughput rising above 210,000 TEU.

"The peak-season cargo flow is steady - import TEU were up seven per cent - and we are maintaining our consistency in delivery of service," Virginia port authority CEO John Reinhart.

Rail container volume in September surged by 16.4 per cent compared to the same month last year, while truck box volume declined 5.7 per cent. Break-bulk tonnage was down 15.6 per cent and export container volume fell 1.8 per cent. Volumes at Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) rose 55 per cent.

From January through September, the port`s container throughput was up two per cent; box rail volume, up 11.8 per cent; truck-container volume, down 3.7 per cent while the Virginia Inland Port saw container volumes rise 6.3 per cent and Richmond Marine Terminal`s volume was up 30 per cent.

"We are moving toward a positive outcome for the year, and we will be converting the momentum we gain from a solid performance into action as we near the start of construction at Virginia International Gateway," said Mr Reinhart.
