Grounded Maersk ship delays southbound Suez convoy eight hours

THE 9,971-TEU Maersk Shams, under long-term charter agreement to Maersk Line, ran aground while in a southbound convoy of 33 ships in the Suez Canal, reports Mumbai`s Shipping Times.

The ship held back the rest of the convoy which had to wait as the vessel was refloated at 11pm with the assistance of canal tugs.

The 111,032-dwt Maersk Shams is currently being assessed for damage at the Port Said anchorage. She is a new vessel and was delivered by Hyundai Heavy Industries last December to Oceanbulk Containers. 

Oceanbulk`s current fleet stands at eight 10,000-TEU containers, and its orderbook comprises of five 11,000 TEU containers to be delivered last next year.

The vessel is under a long-term charter agreement with Maersk Line.
