THE Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has taken in charge the 19,224 TEU MSC Ditte, the eighth of a series of 12 units of the same size ordered at DSME.

The MSC Ditte has joined the Maersk-MSC Far East-Europe AE-2/ Swan loop, offered within the context of the 2M shipping alliance. She replaces the 15,908 TEU MSC Istanbul, which is to be shifted to the AE-1/Shogun loop, in turn replacing the 13,092 TEU Maersk Erving, displaced to the AE-6-P-6/Lion-Pearl pendulum, reports Alphaliner.

The MSC Ditte is part of a newbuilding programme, totalling 20 containerships of this size, ordered in several steps from July 2013 to March 2015.

Aside from the 12 ships being built by DSME, six units were ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries, and the remaining two ships are being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Six of the 12 DSME ships were contracted by Bank of Communications Leasing Co Ltd (BoCom), while six others were contracted by Minsheng Financial Leasing Co Ltd (MSFL). These 12 vessels are on long-term lease to MSC, which also acts as ship manager.
