The top 22 seaports experienced growth increases from two per cent in 2013 to 4.5 per cent in 2014 and five per cent in 2015.
During the first two months of 2016 it appeared upward trends would continue, but March and April showed declines.
Some of the most high-growth seaports during 2015 including Savannah, Charleston and Houston have continued to witness a complete reversal with negative TEU growth during the first four months of 2016.
The statistics also show that east coast TEU traffic has overtaken the west coast by percentage performance from last month, driven by Baltimore and Miami as larger rivals have experienced flat to negative performance.
Major Gulf Coast ports have witnessed a slight pick-up in performance with the exception of Houston. Many large seaport peers have witnessed worse performance than mid-sized peers with exceptions being Los Angeles, Virginia and Oakland.
A further softening container traffic environment throughout the year will continue to add pressure to an already challenging Class I rail situation.
The most notable performers have included the ports of Los Angeles, Virginia, Oakland, Lazaro Cardenas, Miami, Veracruz, Baltimore and Altamira. These seaports have either witnessed slower declines or positive improvements in traffic.
