FRENCH transport has suffered disruption this week as trade unions representing rail and road workers as well as airport staff and seafarers go on strike to protest new labour legislation and working conditions.

Two days of strikes have been set for this week, but some unions favour rolling stoppages that could hit cross-Channel services at major Channel ports such as Calais and Dunkirk, while rail and air traffic schedules may also be affected.

But a spokesman for cross-Channel ferry operator P&O Ferries told Lloyd`s Loading List that the company expected to be sailing as usual on Tuesday, "that`s our message to customers".

Truckers are unhappy that they have received no response from the transport minister over their concerns that labour reforms include provision to lower the rate of pay for overtime work.

Normandy drivers are planning to block roads, notably in the vicinity of the city of Caen, but it is unclear whether there will be similar action in other regions.
