COLOMBO International Container Terminals (CICT), a joint venture company between Hong Kong`s China Merchants and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), handled a record 1.56 million TEU in 2015 increasing 2015 year-on-year volume by 3.6 per cent.

Buoyed by CICT`s strong performance, Colombo port handled a total of 5.18 million TEU last year, an increase of 5.7 per cent over the previous year.

Sixty-seven per cent of this traffic was carried on mega-ships deployed on the Asia-Europe trade lane.

Mega ship arrivals included the likes of the 16,652-TEU MSC New York, 16,020-TEU CMA CGM Marco Polo and Maersk`s 14,770 TEU ships. CICT is currently the only deep water terminal in South Asia equipped with facilities to handle such vessels, reported The Dubai Maritime Standard.
