SINGAPORE`s global port operator, PSA International (PSA), has announced that total container throughput across all its terminal operations worldwide declined by two per cent in 2015 compared to the previous year, to 64.1 million TEU.

The group`s flagship PSA Singapore Terminals saw volumes decrease 8.7 per cent last year to 30.62 million TEU while terminals outside Singapore handled 33.48 million TEU, representing a year on year gain of five per cent.

"2015 was a tough year with weak trade growth reflecting unsteady global economy," said PSA chief executive Tan Chong Meng.

"Trade in the second half of the year was particularly lacklustre, and this added to the pressures that were already building up due to structural shifts such as ship upsizing, sustained overcapacity, changes in liner alliances, and the effect of prolonged lower oil prices.

"We will continue to invest, to upgrade our operations, and to give our best in serving our customers and partners in anticipation of better times ahead," said Mr Tan.
