THE Port of Virginia handled a record 2,549,270 TEU in 2015, representing a 6.5 per cent year-on-year increase, though December`s container volume fell 3.1 per cent to 197,039 TEU.

Most of the increase came in the first half, when Virginia enjoyed several months of double-digit growth due mainly to containers being diverted to US east coast ports to avoid west coast labour strife congestion that lasted until the end of February.

The port of Virginia`s volume growth slowed during the second half of 2015 to 3.1 per cent from July through December, with import volumes over this period registering an increase of just 0.6 per cent and exports up 5.3 per cent, reported IHS Media.

In December import volume decreased by 7.7 per cent year on year to 86,779 TEU, while exports contracted by 0.9 per cent, to 110,260 TEU.

Containers shipped by rail rose by eight per cent during the year and totalled 484,081 units of all sizes.

"We are now focused on the future - adding capacity and cargo conveyance equipment, making greater use of technology and strategic planning," said Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart.

"We have more work to do on building infrastructure and developing processes to remain a sustainable business and grow the port," he said.
