DP WORLD is to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether to proceed with the proposed Phase II (South) expansion of the Fairview Container Terminal at Prince Rupert port.

The company will base its decision on current shipping line services and container volume growth forecasts for transpacific trade on the west coast, reported the UK`s Seatrade Maritime News.

The Phase II North expansion at the DP World-operated terminal is currently under construction and scheduled for completion in 2017. Once completed, this expansion will raise Fairview Container Terminal`s capacity to 1.3 million TEU.

"Phase II South, which could potentially be delivered within the next three to five years depending on demand, would increase the total capacity of Fairview Container Terminal to in excess of two million TEU, and would provide capacity to meet Canada`s Pacific container terminal capacity requirements for decades to come,`` said DP World Canada, general manager, Maksim Mihic.
