ESTONIA`s Muuga container terminal handled a total of 157,385 TEU in the first nine months of the year, 20 per cent down on the box volume during the same period last.

Transiidikeskuse, the operator of the Muuga Container Terminal, handled 356,200 tonnes of dry and break-bulk during the nine-month period , an increase of nearly 27 per cent year on year.

However, the total throughput in the first nine months of the year decreased by 7.7 per cent over the same period last year to 1.98 million tonnes, according to the Baltic Transport Journal.

Chairman of the board of Transiidikeskuse, Erik Laidvee, spoke about the current tough container market: "The economic war caused by the geopolitical situation has decreased the container turnover in the ports of the Baltic Sea by 20-30 per cent. We are competing with other ports for every container and tonne.

"We have started to pay more attention to containerising exported Estonian goods," Mr Laidvee said.

"We`re currently carrying out several new projects concerning loading grain and other bulk and piece goods into containers, for which we are continuously making large investments and purchasing new technological loading equipment. This is the only way to achieve such results that would allow us to continuously support the well-being of our employees and keep extending meanwhile."
