EGYPT`s Port Said Suez Canal Container Terminal is expected to raise its capacity to 5.4 million TEU to capitalise on the increased vessel calls expected following the opening of the waterways new 72-kilometre navigation channel.

To expand the terminal, SCCT hopes its majority shareholder, Singapore`s APM Terminals, will acquire an additional four super postpanamax cranes, taking the total number of units at the terminal to 24, with delivery slated for mid-2016, reports Lloyd`s List.

Since its opening in 2004, US$800 million has been invested in SCCT, one of the busiest transshipment terminals in the Mediterranean region. Last year, the terminal handled 3.5 million TEU.
