Mega-alliances work for Antwerp as Far East boxes rocket 28.2pc

SHIPPING alliances worked for the Port of Antwerp in the Far East trades where first half box throughput increased 28.2 per cent year on year at the Deurganck dock.

Overall the Port of Antwerp Authority posted a first half 9.5 per cent year-on-year container volume increase to 4,836,243 TEU. 

The Geneva-based Italian-Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), the world`s No 2 container shipping company after Maersk, is moving operations to the Deurganck dock where growth is expected to be even more robust.

Ro/ro volume was up 3.9 per cent to 2,436,890 tonnes, although the number of cars handled fell 9.6 per cent to 581,458. 

Owing to a fall in fruit volumes, breakbulk was down 3.9 per cent to 4.8 million tonnes. Iron and steel was up 1.3 per cent to 3.3 million tonnes. 

The liquid bulk increased 7.4 per cent to 32.6 million tonnes with oil derivatives up 2.8 per cent to 23 millions thought chemicals top all in growth, up 32 per cent to 7.2 million tonnes.
