Ningbo-Zhoushan port first half container volume up 9pc to 10.5 million TEU

THE Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan has posted a nine per cent first half year-on-year increase in container volume to 10.5 million TEU, Tranport Ministry data reveals.

More than 10.2 million TEU were handled by Ningbo, up 9.3 per cent, while some 300,000 TEU were handled by Zhoushan, up 4.3 per cent year on year, reports IHS Maritime 360.

Ningbo-Zhoushan over all cargo throughput came to 454 million tonnes, up 1.5 per cent, with Ningbo handling 258 million tonnes, down 2.4 per cent while Zhoushan volume increased 8.2 per cent to 196 million tonnes.

Cargo volume for foreign trade in Ningbo-Zhoushan port totalled 214 million tonnes in the first half of 2015, down 1.4 per cent from a year ago, while June foreign trade stood at 37.2 million tonnes, up 4.1 per cent.

In June Ningbo-Zhoushan port handled 80.3 million tonnes, up 6.8 per cent from a year ago, of which 43.3 million tonnes were handled by Ningbo, down 6.2 per cent and 37 million tonnes by Zhoushan up 27.4 per cent.

The port`s Meishan Container Terminal handled 1.1 million TEU for the first half of 2015, a surge of 53.3 per cent from a year ago. The terminal`s throughput is expected to surpass 2.2 million for full-year 2015, according to a source from the port authority.
