Panama Canal takes water shortage counter-measures

WATER levels at Panama`s Gatun and Madden Lakes are currently well below normal for this time of year, according to a Panama Canal Authority Advisory to shipping.

Based on an analysis of data of current and projected water use, as well as the estimated rainfall in the Panama Canal, the canal has implemented conservation measures to reduce the possibility of draft restrictions.

Thus, the following measures are being taken: Suspension of hydraulic assist procedures for deep draft vessels, maximisation of the use of cross-filling and cross-spilling at the locks, suspension of special lockages for handlines and maximisation of tandem lockages.

These measures are not expected to have a major impact on the canal`s capacity, but may impact normal transits. These conservation measures are expected to remain in force until the water levels return to normal, reports GAC Hot Port News.
