German shipping company Hamburg Süd has entered the east-west trade through signing a “global co-operation agreement” with United Arab Shipping Company (UASC).

The two shipping companies, the world’s 11th and 18th biggest respectively according to Alphaliner, have agreed a slot-exchange which will give Hamburg Süd slots on several UASC routes.

Specifically, these are four Asia-US West Coast loops, one Asia-US East Coast loop, two Asia-North Europe services and one from Asia to the Mediterranean.

According to Alphaliner, the German company will have around 1,700 slots per week on the Asia-US services. The allocation on the Asia-Europe loops was not identified.

CM reported in September that UASC will, in turn, enter Hamburg Süd’s core trades (South America to Europe and Asia) in mid-2015.

Dr. Ottmar Gast, chairman of the executive board of Hamburg Süd, said in September: “This cooperation will enable Hamburg Süd and UASC to complement each other’s core services and networks, offering both lines’ customers a more comprehensive global reach and reliable services without incremental investment in new tonnage.

J?rn Hinge, president and chief executive officer of UASC, said at that time: “This cooperation with Hamburg Süd enables access to the South America trades and illustrates our ambitious approach to enhance geographic coverage.

UASC recently formed the Ocean Three alliance with CMA CGM and China Shipping with the first alliance vessel set to sail in January.

The company also recently opened an office in Switzerland last week to focus on attracting customers in the country.
