FINLAND`s Neste Oil will be ready to introduce a low sulphur marine fuel by mid-December, reports London`s Tanker Operator.

"The new product is considerably more refined than the usual heavy fuel used on vessels today. As a result of improved product quality, the new low-sulphur marine fuel keeps the vessel`s engine cleaner and prolongs servicing interval of the engine," said Neste Oil sales chief Olli Vesamo.

The new fuel will significantly reduce sulphur, nitrogen and particle emissions on board ship, the supplier claimed.

"The fuel`s quality also brings savings in operating costs. By using a low sulphur marine fuel, our customers avoid the need to make large changes to their ships, such as installing sulphur scrubbers," he said.

The product has been tested in different types of engines on five vessels, including the twin-screw double-acting aframaxes. The product worked perfectly in both main and auxiliary engines, Neste Oil said.

The new fuel is stable and compatible with middle distillates. There is no problematic bacterial growth in fuel tanks, as it does not contain traditional bio-diesel FAME (fatty acid methyl ester), the company claimed.

Neste Oil produces low sulphur fuel at its Porvoo and Naantali refineries and once introduced, the new product will be available at Finnish ports.

It will be distributed by bunkering vessel in the Helsinki region. Neste Oil said that it will also export the low sulphur fuel.
