The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has notified marine fuel suppliers to ensure that any fuel they supply to ships heading to the US Caribbean Sea Emissions Control Area complies with new sulfur limits taking effect in the new year.

"From January 1, 2014, all ships operating within the US Caribbean Sea ECA shall only use fuel oil with sulfur content not exceeding 1.00%, and from January 1, 2015, fuel with sulfur content not exceeding 0.10%," MPA said in a statement late Tuesday.

The upcoming change is mandated by a International Maritime Organization regulation.

"Shipowners are also advised to properly maintain clear entries in the oil record book and ensure the [bunker delivery note] is in good order as documentary proof of vessel`s compliance to the requirements," MPA said in the notice.

Singapore is the top bunkering port in the world in terms of volume, with some 42.7 million mt traded in 2012.
