The standoff between the two groups of coastal vessel owners over transportation of cargoes remained as a meeting held in Dhaka failed to resolve the problem.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan held talks with the leaders of both the groups, but it yielded no results as both the groups stuck to their respective stance, meeting sources said.

The minister took note of the opinions of both the groups and called another joint meeting Wednesday , the sources also said.

Bangladesh Cargo Vessel Owners Association (BCVOA), however, submitted an alternative proposal that the mother vessels` cargoes should be distributed to the cargo vessel owners as well as the industrial group owners having vessels of their own.

The BCVOA earlier said that all vessel owners should register with the Water Transport Cell which will distribute cargoes to the vessel owners for transportation by maintaining a serial.

But the industrial group maintained that they would not register with the WTC and would carry their cargoes by their own vessels.

Discharging of cargoes from mother vessels at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port remained has long been remaining suspended due to the strike of the river vessel workers who demanded a hike in wages by 20 per cent.

Port officials said as many as 23 mother vessels remained stranded at the outer anchorage.

The industrial group agreed to enhance the wages in a tripartite meeting organised in Dhaka on April 12 but the members of BCVOA said the demands could not be met as they were incurring losses due to the hike in fuel prices and other reasons.
