Japan sold 303,696 kiloliters (1.91 million barrels) of bonded bunker fuel in February, down 4.2% year on year, according to data released Tuesday by the country`s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

February volumes were also 12.7% lower than January sales of 347,917 kl.

Industry sources attributed the lower sales to the Lunar New Year holiday, which was celebrated by several Asian countries in February this year. Last year, the holiday occurred in January.

Sales of bonded marine diesel oil in February were 5,688 kl, up 30.8% from a year earlier but 8.7% lower than January, according to the data.

Bunker fuel sales in March are expected increase to about 355,000 kl, traders said, pointing to incremental demand from newly-built vessels.

The official March sales figures will be released on May 16.
Bonded bunker fuel is exempt from tax and can be sold only to ships plying international routes.
