US EASTERN Seaboard ports were braced for Hurricane Sandy with extensive contingency plans to limit damage and spare port facilities the worst of the weather.

The Port of New York & New Jersey`s maritime facilities were closed. The port of Baltimore enacted maritime condition "Yankee" banning all vessel movements in the port without official approval.

In the flooded New York-New Jersey docks, all deep draft vessels and barges heavier than 500 gross tons remained in port at their moorings with no vessel entering, transiting within the Port of NY/NJ without the permission of the Captain of the Port.

Tug companies and piloting organisations were told to report on the status and availability of boats and stand ready to assist if called upon.

The Port Authority`s airports - John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, Stewart International and LaGuardia - were kept open, but air carriers had ceased operations, and passengers were encouraged avoid airports.

Since October 29 a tropical storm warning has been in effect for the north of Surf City to Duck North Carolina, Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds and Bermuda.

Hurricane-force winds also hit from Chincoteague, Virginia to Chatham, Massachusetts. This includes the tidal Potomac from Cobb Island to Smith Point, the middle and upper Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay and the coasts of the northern Delmarva Peninsula, New Jersey, the New York City area, Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
