AP Moller-Maersk Group CEO Nils Andersen has been admitted to hospital in Switzerland for an emergency heart valve replacement while the chief executive of his biggest unit, Maersk Line, is clearing his desk to go for new job in banking.

Said a Maersk statement: "During a vacation in Switzerland his condition deteriorated acutely, and has undergone surgery, which comprised replacement of a cardiac valve. Doctors are expecting a full recovery."

At the end of next week, Maersk Line CEO Eivind Kolding steps down to join Danske Bank to be replaced by Soren Skou, the CEO of Maersk Tankers.

"I am very sorry that Nils S Andersen is going through this course of illness, but I am pleased that he quickly received the right, skilled treatment which coupled with the fact that he is in good shape means that we can soon welcome him back," says Maersk Group chairman Michael Pram Rasmussen.

"The executive board will run AP Moller-Maersk Group during Nils Andersen`s absence," said Mr Rasmussen.
