CMA CGM to raise rates and add surcharges in January and February

MARSEILLES shipping giant CMA CGM has announced it will increase freight rates and impose peak season surcharges on versatile trade lanes starting January 1.

Rates on cargo from Asia to the east coast of South America will increase US$600 per TEU from January 1. For Asia-Caribbean loops, rates will rise $560 per TEU and $800 per FEU. For Asia-South Africa trade, rates will be up $200 per TEU, and for services between Asia and Indian Ocean islands, the increase will be $100 per TEU.


Starting January 5, rates for services from Asia to Mexico, and the west coast of Central and South America will rise $500 per TEU.


From January 15, the world`s third largest carrier will levy a peak season surcharge of $150 per TEU for dry or reefer cargo sailing from New Zealand to the Far East, south east Asia, the Middle East, and all ports in Africa.


Effective February 1, the carrier will increase the rates by $150 per TEU and $250 per FEU for services between the Persian Gulf and Europe.


Also, CMA CGM said it will consider to impose a congestion surcharge of $100 per TEU at Dar es Salaam on its SWAX service between India, the Middle East and East Africa. The carrier also plans to adjust the congestion surcharge at Mombasa from $110 per TEU to $210 per TEU on the same service.


The SWAX service calls at Nhava Sheva, Jebel Ali, Khor Fakkan, Mombasa, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and back to Nhava Sheva, according to American Shipper.
