THE Port of Los Angeles, the largest container port in the US, experienced a boom in exports this year with a record-breaking monthly export volumes of 195,877 TEU in November, up 15 per cent year on year.

By comparison, November imports increased 6.2 per cent to 354,313 TEU year on year.

In October, the port also handled 193,547 TEU, up 28 per cent compared to the same month of 2010, reported London`s International Freighting Weekly, adding that the port had handled a total of 1.9 million TEU in the first nine months, already surpassing the volumes of 1.8 million in full-year 2010.

The port expects that the full-year 2011 export volumes will exceed two million TEU.

A weak US dollar helped drive US exports worldwide, particularly to Asia. Major export items include raw materials, cotton and grains as well as high-value computers, medical equipment and aerospace components. Besides India and China, Brazil and other emerging nations are all targeted markets.
