COSCO Pacific subsidiary Jinjiang Pacific Ports Development (JPPDC), which operates a two-berth container terminal at Weitou port in China`s Fujian province, has ordered two Kalmar E-One2 type rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes from Helsinki-based Cargotec.

The all-electric RTGs, to be delivered in May 2012, will stack containers one-over-five high, span six container rows plus a roadway and have a lift capacity of 41 tonnes, increasing the terminal`s handling capacity.

Throughput at the terminal is increasing rapidly and is expected to reach 400,000 TEU next year 800,000 TEU in 2015 after the second phase expansion project is completed.

Cargotec director Dennis Lue said: "While China is a key market for us, this is the first RTG order that we have secured in this country in five years. Our success in winning the contract shows how competitive our RTGs are becoming."

JPPDC already uses Cargotec`s Kalmar reachstackers in its landside operations.

Cosco Pacific, which has 80 per cent stake in JPPDC, is the world`s fifth largest container terminal operator.
