EFFORTS of five liner companies, Maersk Line, MSC, CMA CGM, Evergreen and Hapag-Lloyd, to create the Cargo Incident Notification System Network (Cinsnet) have received support by British maritime underwriter TT Club, which will provide expertise in sustaining the commercial-neutral database.

Cinsnet is now open for membership to all shipowners and operators, reported London`s Containerisation International, adding that the database intends to capture structured key casual information relating to cargo and container handling incidents.

"Gathering such information will provide an early warning of worrying trends," said the TT Club statement. "Furthermore, it will alert carriers to difficulties encountered with cargoes that display dangerous characteristics, but may not yet have been recognised as such in the IMDG [International Dangerous Goods] Code."

"Transparency will reveal how widespread unsafe practices are in the unit load industry. It will drive improved advice and training, including issues of packing and securing of cargo within containers," said the TT Club.
