THE UN`s International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will investigate the prevalence and dangers of false container weight declarations to prevent wrongful stowage, thus reducing risks of capsizing ships or having slot columns collapse while at sea.

The IMO has established a working group with representatives from Netherlands, Denmark and Australia to consider demands by the World Shipping Council and the International Chamber of Shipping for an international legal requirements that container weights be verified before loading.

Weighing containers before loading in some countries is done to detect false container weight declarations and improved safety without detracting from efficiency, despite claims it would slow down the supply chain, said the WSC.
