MAERSK Line, the largest carrier of the world, has announced it will increase its piracy risk surcharge 40 per cent on April 1 to US$350 from today`s $250 per FEU surcharge on trade between Europe, the Indian Ocean islands and East Africa.

"As a result of increased piracy, and our efforts to prevent attacks and protect our crews and cargo, we have revised our emergency risk surcharges to mitigate higher security expenses," said Maersk.

For Middle East-East Africa trade lanes, the surcharge will go to $400 per FEU from $250 per FEU now. Additionally, the new surcharge for US-East Africa strings will be $400 per FEU, up $100 from $300 per FEU at present.
