More local strikes expected to disrupt French port work

CONTINUING local strikes and labour disruptions are expected at French ports until April over late retirement provisions in the law affecting all workers as well as a move to privatise ports, informed sources tell London`s Containerisation International.

State-employed crane drivers dislike the idea of working for the private sector, which seeks wider entry to the job classification.


Le Havre`s Port Authority (GMBH) has assured crane drivers they will keep their jobs if private stevedoring companies take over, and has even agreed to an industrial tribunal deal with complaints after privatisation.
