RUSSIA has sent another icebreaker Krasin to its Far East Sakhalin Bay area to work with the Admiral Makarov and the Magadan icebreakers to free a group of ships stranded in heavy ice, reported the Ria Novosti news agency.

The Bereg Nadezhdy, the Professor Kizevetter research vessel and the Sodruzhestvo fishery ship have been stuck in two metres of ice in the Sea of Okhotsk since December 31. More than 400 people are on board the vessels.

The rescue was so slow due to strong winds, low visibility and shifting ice in the area. It is believed that with the aid of Krasin the stranded ships would be freed soon.
