DREWRY`s annual review of container terminal operators puts Dubai`s DP World in the number three port spot as global terminal operator, surpassing Maersk`s APM Terminal, which slips to number four, but still behind Singapore`s PSA International in first place and Hutchison Port Holdings in second.

DP World passed APM Terminal`s 31.1 million TEU with 31.5 million TEU and 6.7 per cent share behind Hutchison`s 6.8 per cent share and Singapore`s PSA International with 9.5 per cent.

DP World acquisitions this year made the difference with new buys in Algeria, Dijibouti and Vietnam as well as an expansion at Jebel Ali, and consolidation at its existing ports. Despite declines of eight per cent year on year at consolidated ports, the company was still able to post a US$580 million profit in the first half drawn on revenue of $1.46 billion.

Expansion will be key to DP World`s continued success when the market turns including its project on hold of Terminal 3 based on a man-made offshore island which the operator predicts will increase overall capacity to 50 million TEU over the next 10 years, reported India`s Economic Times.
