JAPANESE shipping giant NYK and its subsidiary Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co Ltd have developed an oil additive - Yunic 700LS - to make environmentally-approved and mandated low-sulphur marine oil oily enough not to damage engine parts.

"Low-sulphur marine gas oils lack sufficient lubricity and could result in abnormal friction and in defects to engines parts such as fuel-supply and fuel-injection pumps," said an NYK statement.

By blending the additive into low-sulphur marine gas oils, mechanical troubles in fuel-oil systems, which can result from use of low-sulphur marine gas oils, can be prevented, said NYK.

This is needed because the European Union limited to 0.1 per cent the sulphur content of low-sulphur fuel oils used from January 1. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will also begin enforcement of its restrictions on January 2012.
