SHANTOU International Container Terminals (SICT) has handled the first call on the Japan service (CJ12) operated by Cosco.

This comes as Cosco extends its CJ12 service to Shantou, 200 kilometres up the coast from Hong Kong, to take advantage of increasing trade between South China and Japan. CJ12 vessels require 15 days to complete a rotation including Hong Kong, Nansha, Shantou, Xiamen, Yokohama, Tokyo, Negoya and Moji.

Ronald Wan, general manager of SICT, said: "The CJ12 is the first direct service launched in Shantou this year. The two vessels of the service are the largest ships to have ever called at SICT, with capacities of 1,432 TEU and 1,702 TEU. Cosco`s choice of SICT shows the shipping line`s confidence in our terminal facilities and service
